Maine Street started out around 1968 as Stax Volt Review. They were one of the best soul bands around Auckland at the time. A very popular band with audiences who saw them play at the Forum and Chequers. They spent their final months in residence at the Bowl in lower Queen St, before changing their name to Maine Street in 1970.

As Maine Street they released one single on the Ventura label in 1970 called "Mornin' Mornin' "/"The Letter".

Dave Ingram and Owen Fleet were both members of a later version of Roger Skinner's Motivation.
