The Convention Cruise overprints came in a folder, also overprinted, together with an overprinted miniature sheet. There were two versions, silver (100 only) and gold (50 only). Of these a handful were signed and stamped by the captain of the cruise boat. See illustration below right.

Both booklets were reprinted with the only difference being a rate chart was placed on the reverse instead of the reef scene. With this issue, I now get to voice my opinion of overprints. To date, all overprints of booklets have been produced by Australia Post or a Philatelic Society or Club. The purpose of these overprints is to raise some revenue to support the Clubs and Societies and further the hobby of stamp collecting. With this particular booklet, a certain individual, who happens to be a printer by trade, decided that overprints were a great way to make money. He subsequently produced 42 different overprints on both barcodes. This is certainly not within the spirit of the hobby and as such I do not support such actions. This practice has continued with further booklets and I will point them out where they occur. The topics for the overprints are totally unrelated to anything to do with philately, for example, First Woman In Space, 50 Years Of Doctor Who, JFK Assassination and Anniversaries Of Beatles songs. Clearly an example of someone trying to take advantage of collectors. It is easy to stop, don't support the individual by buying his cheap product, and don't give them catalogue status. |
