Des Gibson

 

Des Gibson, a pop/country singer from Napier, performed regularly with backing band, The Echoes.

The Echoes consisted of Mike Angland (Guitar), Paul Gitmond (Sax), Kevin McElroy (Drums), replaced by Johnny Dick (Drums), and Laurie Tussell (Piano).

Mike Angland and Johnny Dick both were later members of Max Merritt & The Meteors.

Des Gibson recorded five singles from 1960 to 1962 on the Pacific label. They were "Corinna Corinna"/"There  She Goes", "Little Lonely One"/"Runaway", "Travellllin' Man"/"Tonight My Love Tonight", "Sit Around And Talk To Me"/"After Tonight" and "Alice In Wonderland"/"Sweet Little Sixteen Twist". The first four were with The Echoes and the last with The Ken Charles Combo.



In 1963, Des moved to Viking and recorded three more single, the third with The Embers. They were "From A Jack To A King"/"Mad, Mad World". "Will I Do"/"Falling Teardrops" and "Letter Of Heartbreak"/"Beggin' On My Knees".


While he was at Viking, he also enjoyed success as a songwriter. His song, "You Don't Talk About Love" was selected as the B-Side to Dinah Lee's first single.

Des later worked and recorded in Australia.
